Is there a secret to living well – and thriving – with cancer?
So many of us find ways of coping with major challenges in our lives.
My wife Jennifer found her own unique way of living with cancer.
She had already lived successfully with a kidney transplant for almost 28 years when she was diagnosed.
Here, in her own words, she explains how she coped:
‘I always say I am living or dancing with cancer rather than fighting with it.
‘I do not talk in terms of battles or struggles as I feel these are very negative thoughts and suggests that one of you will lose.
‘I prefer to think of my cancer as a rose that has shed a few petals in my body. The petals have been picked up with the rose remaining and as long as we regularly prune it back it will stay in check and we will rub along together, which suits me fine.
‘Over all my years with my transplant, I have had many doctors trying to work out the secret of its longevity. To be honest, it comes down to one thing; positive thinking. Truly believing that your kidney will survive and you will have a long life.
‘I have adopted exactly the same policy with cancer.’
Jenny’s approach worked for her.
She lived life to the full, continued her important work as a dementia specialist – and enjoyed many wonderful, happy days with me and her family and friends.
We are producing a special anthology of stories from breast cancer survivors – and their supporters – to help inspire all those facing a cancer diagnosis.
If you have a story to tell – or a particular coping mechanism – we would love to hear from you.
Perhaps you could tell us:
• How you reacted when you were told you had breast cancer
• What you told your family and friends
• What impact the diagnosis had on your life, your work and those closest to you
• What decisions you made to get through the worst crisis of your life
• How you faced up to treatment – and living with breast cancer
*Jennifer’s story is told in Make it Happen: Jennifer – an inspiration to us all, which is published by Troubador. If you purchase a copy from Pink Ribbon, all proceeds will go to the charity.
