Links between breast cancer and diabetes

There are a lot of stories in the press about diabetes, but not so many about the links between diabetes and breast cancer. Here is some information about how diabetes might affect anyone with breast cancer - and how you can potentially fight off type 2 diabetes.

Overview: More than 3 million people have type 1 or type 2 diabetes in the UK.

Type 1 Diabetes is an auto-immune disease and cannot be avoided. It means the body stops producing enough insulin to live, so people with type 1 diabetes have to pump or inject insulin into their bodies more than once a day. A change in diet or exercise will not help. Currently there is no cure for type 1.

But type 2 diabetes is different. It has been shown that type 2 diabetes can be reversed in some people if they stick to a rigid diet prescribed by their doctor and nutritionist.

This is important news for breast cancer patients because there is increasing evidence of links between type 2 diabetes and cancer. Studies show that people with type 2 diabetes have 23% greater risk of developing breast cancer compared to people who do not have type 2. There is also a 38% increase in mortality for breast cancer patients who have diabetes compared to breast cancer patients who do not.

What can you do if you have type 2?

If you have type 2 diabetes you can talk to your doctor about your dietary habits and ask to follow a meal plan similar to the successful clinical trials in this area of diabetes and follow the plan for as long as it takes (results have shown diabetes can be reversed in just a few weeks). Warning: its not fun. The meal plan is rigid and it may require you to change your eating habits. But the upside is that you have the potential to rid your body of type 2 diabetes. The knock-on effect is worth it.

There are also apps out there to manage your eating and exercise habits.

What can you do if you have type 1?

Reports indicate links between type 2 diabetes and breast cancer, but not type 1.

* Early detection of type 2 diabetes helps to minimise its effects, so get checked for diabetes.
