This January, 5,000 women in rural Cameroon will receive unprecedented access to vital tools for managing their menstrual health with the support of US-based African Women’s Education and Development Forum (AWEDP-Forum), UK-based Femmecup Ltd and Canadian organization Mother Nature Partnership.

This collaboration of women’s organizations is launching a joint initiative with the support of a prestigious Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grand Challenge Explorations grant.

Mother Nature Partnership (MNP) was founded in 2010 by Cameroonian Veronica Kette and Canadian Irene Whittaker-Cumming, after the pair identified severe taboos and a lack of menstrual health awareness in Cameroon. These factors pose serious obstacles to a woman’s ability to participate in work, school, family and personal life in rural Cameroon. This lack of agency negatively impacts everything from a woman's individual health to her freedom to the local economy.

This initiative will dismantle harmful taboos surrounding menstruation, which currently prevent many women and girls from accessing safe menstrual hygiene protection . In addition to facing stigma, women and girls are forced to spend vital income on prohibitively expensive products, resort to using unsafe and ineffective methods such as rags, hay and newspaper or are even ostracized into confinement.

In order to address these issues, local healthcare professionals will lead workshops centered on reproductive health for Cameroonian women smallholder farmers, while MNP will distribute Femmecup menstrual cups and washable cloth pads to the participants.

UK company Femmecup have linked with MNP to provide 4000 reusable menstrual cups, which only need to be replaced every few years. Their award-winning menstrual solution is an economical, eco-friendly, convenient and healthy alternative to costly disposable menstrual hygiene products.

Femmecup's mission is to inform every woman about the many benefits of using Femmecup menstrual cup and to offer women the right to make an informed decision about their sanitary protection.

A spokesman said: “This simple tool paired with education can have a powerful impact on the lives of women. And when a woman is empowered, she in turn empowers her sisters, daughters, family, community and country.”
